The Nubian Shield along the Red Sea has been mined since the pharaohs, and Eritrea sits on a well-mineralised stretch of it: gold, copper and zinc at Bisha and Asmara’s surrounding hills, with ancient workings scattered through the highlands. Eritrea also holds Asmara itself, a startlingly intact Italian modernist city that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Travel to Eritrea is heavily restricted.
