For four thousand years Chinese civilization prized jade above gold, and the finest, the “mutton-fat” white nephrite, came from the rivers around Hotan in Xinjiang, where boulders were gathered from the riverbeds as the meltwater dropped. The Jade Road carried it east long before the Silk Road carried silk. River collecting is now heavily restricted and the good ground picked over; a heritage pin.
