Carrara marble

Marble

The whitest, most famous stone in the history of art. The quarries in the Apuan Alps above Carrara, Italy, have been cut since Roman times, and Michelangelo climbed these mountains himself to choose the block that became the David. The mountainsides are sliced into vast white amphitheatres visible from the sea. Quarry tours run by 4x4 into the working faces. PUBLIC tours; the quarries are ACTIVE industry.
