When George Carmack and his party struck gold on Bonanza (then Rabbit) Creek in August 1896, they set off the Klondike stampede, and the Klondike gold was so concentrated that fortunes came out of a few feet of gravel. The astonishing thing is that you can still pan it: Claim 33 is a commercial pan-your-own operation, and just up the valley is the FREE public claim where anyone can work the ground for gold, no fee, no permit.
