The Sahara is the best meteorite-hunting ground on Earth: dark stones on pale sand, essentially no rain to weather them, and a vast unpopulated surface, and huge numbers of the world’s catalogued meteorites are Northwest African finds recovered by nomadic hunters. The Hoggar massif in southern Algeria also holds volcanic peridot and spectacular basalt spires. Export of meteorites is regulated; buy through reputable dealers who document provenance.
