Big Brook Preserve

Shark teeth, belemnites, ammonites · Late Cretaceous, ~75 mya

A small New Jersey stream cutting Cretaceous marl, and one of the best free fossil creeks in the eastern United States. You sift gravel in ankle-deep water and pull black shark teeth, mostly Squalicorax and sand tiger, plus belemnite guards and the occasional mosasaur fragment. Best right after heavy rain has turned the banks over. Hand tools and screens only, no shovels into the bank, and the township posts the current rules at the lot.
