A valley floor with limestone islands standing up out of it. The mogotes of Viñales are karst towers up to 300 metres tall, found nowhere else in Cuba and matched really only in Southeast Asia, in Borneo and Vietnam and down the Malay Peninsula. The hillsides are punched with cave mouths and two of them are properly visitable, Cueva del Indio, which you finish by boat on the underground river, and Cueva de José Miguel. UNESCO listed the whole 132 square kilometres in 1999, as much for the tobacco farming still done here by hand as for the rock. Pinar del Río province, Cuba.
