A forest of stone. Rain has dissolved a limestone plateau in western Madagascar into a labyrinth of razor-edged pinnacles up to a hundred metres tall (tsingy means roughly “where one cannot walk barefoot”), riddled beneath with caves and canyons and holding lemurs and plants found nowhere else.
