The only volcano on earth where you ride a lift down into the magma chamber. When Thrihnukagigur went quiet about four thousand years ago the magma drained out instead of setting solid, and left a void: 213 metres deep and 3,270 square metres across, walls stained every colour the heat left behind. An open cage lowers you through the crater mouth into the middle of it. Tours have run since 2012 as Inside the Volcano, a short hike out from Reykjavík across the Blue Mountains. PUBLIC, guided, seasonal, and there is nothing else like it anywhere.
