The most important cave for human origins on Earth. In the dolomite caverns at Sterkfontein, northwest of Johannesburg in South Africa, decades of digging have pulled our own deep ancestors out of the rock, “Mrs Ples” and the near-complete “Little Foot” skeleton, over three million years old. The surrounding Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage site holding a huge share of all early-hominid fossils ever found. You can tour the caves and the visitor centre. PUBLIC, near Johannesburg.
