Two hundred and forty metres of limestone under the Guilin karst, three entrances you can walk in through, and formations that have been named for centuries: the Crystal Palace, Fish Tail Peak, the Dragon Pagoda. One giant stalactite is held to be the Monkey King’s magic spear from Journey to the West. What makes it more than a pretty cave is the writing. There are over seventy inscriptions in ink on the walls, poems and travel notes, and the oldest dates to AD 792 in the Tang dynasty, so people were coming here as tourists twelve hundred years ago and leaving notes about it. It was found again in the 1940s by refugees hiding from Japanese troops. The modern lighting is bright coloured floodlight and not to everyone’s taste. Guangxi, China.
