The second-largest salt mine in the world, in the Punjab of Pakistan, worked since the armies of Alexander noticed their horses licking the rocks. Nineteen storeys run into the mountain, and the miners have carved mosques, a miniature Great Wall and a bridge out of translucent pink salt, lit from within.
