Harrison’s Cave, Barbados

Barbados

The eastern Caribbean’s great show cave, a limestone system dissolved out of the island’s coral-rock uplands 210 metres above the sea. Calcium-loaded water has been building stalactites and stalagmites in here for a very long time, and the chambers have names to match: the Great Hall stands over fifty feet, then the Village, the Chapel, the Rotunda and the Altar. First written up in 1795, lost again, rediscovered in the early 1970s and opened in 1981. You ride it on a tram through the Boyce Tunnel and get down on foot at the best formations. PUBLIC, guided, central Barbados.
