A dormant shield volcano 1,950 metres up, the highest mountain in South Korea, with 360 satellite cones scattered around it and a crater lake at the summit. It last erupted roughly five thousand years ago. Everything above 800 metres has been a nature reserve since 1966 and it is remarkably unspoilt for a mountain this accessible; the park keeps marked hiking paths to the top and the walk is a long day, not a scramble.
