Rooms dug by hand into a Dakota sandstone bluff above the Smoky Hill River, in the northwest corner of the Smoky Hill Wildlife Area. Settlers cut them and used them as a milk house, a schoolhouse and living quarters. The same tan sandstone breaks into the caves and crevices of Horsethief Canyon at Kanopolis, the first state park in Kansas, a few miles southeast, so the two make one day out. Gravel roads most of the way, then a short walk through grass and river timber. PUBLIC, Ellsworth County.
