Ellora & Ajanta

India

Not natural caves but something more astonishing: temples carved DOWN into the living rock. At Ellora in Maharashtra, India, generations of craftsmen cut 34 monasteries and temples from the basalt cliff, crowned by the Kailasa temple, the largest single monolithic structure on Earth, excavated top-down out of one piece of mountain. Nearby Ajanta holds painted Buddhist cave-shrines two thousand years old. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites and among the wonders of the human hand. PUBLIC, near Aurangabad.
