Crystal Cave, Bermuda

Bermuda

Two twelve-year-olds went after a lost cricket ball in 1905 and found this instead. The cave runs about 500 metres and drops 62 metres, and the bottom 19 or 20 metres of it are underwater, a pool so clear the floor looks close enough to touch. Stalactites and stalagmites throughout, some of them snapped by old earthquakes. It opened to visitors in 1907 and is still open, run by the Wilkinson Trust. Fantasy Cave next door is deeper, 88 steps down; it was found at the same time, shut in the 1940s and reopened in the summer of 2001. Hamilton Parish, near Castle Harbour.
