The salt lick where American paleontology was born: ice-age mammoths, mastodons and giant ground sloths came to the springs, got mired, and died in such numbers that their bones paved the ground. Thomas Jefferson sent men to gather them, and the fossils shaped the whole young science of extinction. A state park now, with a bison herd and a bone-lick trail.
