Slavic tradition gives Bulgaria the zmey, a dragon that is not simply a monster: the male zmey is often a guardian of his village’s fields and a bringer of rain, fighting the destructive lamia that brings hail and drought. Whole hillsides and springs across the Balkan range carry dragon names. It is old agricultural folklore about weather and survival, told across Bulgaria, Serbia and North Macedonia.
