Yazoo City tells that a witch who lured fishermen to their deaths was chased into the swamp and drowned in quicksand in 1884, swearing with her last breath to come back in twenty years and burn the town to the ground. On May 25th 1904 a fire leveled almost all of Yazoo City. They found her grave in Glenwood Cemetery with a link of its chain border broken, as if something had gotten out. Willie Morris made the tale famous; the grave and the fire are real.
