The Spooklight

Missouri · The Devil’s Promenade, near Hornet (Newton County, Missouri)
The Spooklight
USGS · Public domain · source

On a country road in the far southwest corner of Missouri, near the Oklahoma line, a glowing ball of light has appeared over the road at night for well over a century, splitting, bobbing, changing color, seen by thousands and studied by the Army Corps of Engineers, who could not explain it. Like the Paulding Light and the Marfa lights, the leading explanation is distant car headlights bent along the road by the terrain, but the Hornet Spooklight is one of the oldest and best-attested of its kind, and it is free to drive out and watch tonight.
