In 1949 three brothers digging clay for tiles near Panagyurishte in Bulgaria struck something metal, and lifted out nine vessels of solid gold, over six kilograms of Thracian goldwork from the 4th century BC, shaped as animal-headed drinking horns and a ceremonial amphora. Thrace buried a great deal of gold in these hills, and the Valley of the Thracian Kings nearby keeps giving up tombs. All of it belongs to the state and is in the museums; the point here is that this ground is genuinely full of gold.
