The Palatine Light of Block Island

A burning ship seen off Block Island, tied in local telling to the wreck of the Palatine around 1738 and to a rumour that islanders lured her onto the rocks. The wreck was real, the wrecking accusation almost certainly was not, and the light has been reported into modern times. Whittier put it in a poem and the island has lived with it since.
