The Night Marchers

The Huaka‘i Pō, the Night Marchers, are among the most respected and feared spirits in Hawaiian belief: the ghostly processions of ancient warriors who walk old trails and battlefields at night to the beat of drums and the blowing of conch shells, carrying torches. To see them, the tradition holds, you must lie face-down and show no disrespect, and never cross their path. The Pali, where a great battle was fought, is one of the places they are said to walk.
