Don Juan Lopez Quixada · Public domain · source

At the end of the catastrophic War of the Triple Alliance, which killed a huge share of Paraguay’s population, President Francisco Solano Lopez retreated through the wilderness with the national treasury, gold, jewels and church silver, on ox carts. He was killed at Cerro Cora in 1870, and the treasure was never accounted for. Legend says it lies buried along the retreat, and Paraguayans have hunted it ever since. Guarani folklore fills the same forests with the Yasy Yatere and the Pombero.
