In 1864 a party led by a man remembered only as Adams was guided to a canyon east of the White Mountains where gold lay thick in a creek above a cabin. Apaches wiped out most of the party; Adams escaped and spent the rest of his life failing to find the canyon again. The hunt for the Zigzag Canyon has burned a century and a half of boot leather along the Arizona and New Mexico line. This is the Arizona reading of the story; searchers who favour the New Mexico account put the canyon in the Gila and Datil country, and that pin sits on this map too. Nobody has settled it in 160 years, which is exactly why it is still hunted.
