Estonia has a meteorite crater young enough to be remembered. Around 1500 BC an iron meteorite broke up over the island of Saaremaa and blasted a 110-metre crater, now a round lake ringed by trees, plus eight smaller pits. It landed on inhabited land, and Estonian and Finnish folklore preserves what may be the memory: the Kalevala’s tale of the sun being stolen and fire falling from the sky. The crater is real, walkable and eerie. PUBLIC site, Saaremaa.
