The Edmund Fitzgerald

The biggest ship on the Great Lakes went down here on 10 November 1975 with all twenty-nine hands, seventeen miles from the shelter of Whitefish Bay, in a storm that put seventy-knot winds and thirty-five-foot seas over her decks. She never sent a distress call. She lies in 530 feet of water in Canadian waters, broken in two, and in 1995 her bell was raised and replaced with a replica engraved with the names of the crew. Gordon Lightfoot made her the most famous wreck in North America. The site is a protected grave: it is not a dive.
