The Dungarvon Whooper

New Brunswick · The Dungarvon River, Miramichi (New Brunswick)

New Brunswick’s best-known ghost. The story from the Miramichi lumber camps is that a young cook on the Dungarvon River was murdered for the money in his belt, buried in the snow by the crew, and that ever since a scream comes off that stretch of water and empties the woods of birdsong. Loggers refused to camp there; a priest was eventually brought in to bless the ground. It went into song and became part of the province’s identity, and the Dungarvon is real, remote, beautiful salmon country either way.
