The Copper Scroll treasure

Israel · The caves of Qumran, by the Dead Sea (West Bank)
The Copper Scroll treasure
na · Public domain · source

Among the Dead Sea Scrolls found in the caves at Qumran was one like no other: a scroll beaten out of copper, and instead of scripture it is a LIST, an inventory of 64 hiding places holding an almost unbelievable hoard of gold and silver, tons of it, buried across the Judaean desert around the time of the Roman destruction of Jerusalem. It is real, it is in a museum in Jordan, and it is genuine, but the landmarks it names (“under the steps, forty cubits…”) are two thousand years gone, and not one cache has ever been confidently found. The greatest documented treasure hunt in the world, still open.
