The dunes at the mouth of Delaware Bay were a pirate roost in the early 1700s: Captain Kidd is said to have watered and buried plunder near Cape Henlopen, and the Bay saw enough raiding that Lewes built a fort against it. Treasure has been hunted in these shifting sands for three centuries. The old whaling town of Lewes and the great walking dunes are real; the pirate gold is the legend the sand keeps.
