The Amber Room

One of the great real lost-treasure mysteries. The Amber Room was a chamber lined entirely in carved amber, gold leaf and mirrors, a gift to Russia in 1716 and called an eighth wonder of the world. The Nazis looted it from the palace at Tsarskoye Selo near St. Petersburg in 1941, shipped it to Königsberg, and there it vanished in the chaos of 1945. It has been hunted ever since, in mines, bunkers and sunken ships, and never found. A faithful reconstruction was completed in 2003 in the same palace; the original is still gone.
