Beneath Lower Manhattan sits the most beautiful subway station ever built in New York, the original City Hall terminal of 1904, ringed in Guastavino tile arches, colored skylights and brass chandeliers. It closed in 1945 when longer trains could not fit its tight curve, and has sat sealed and quietly lit ever since. You can still glimpse it by staying aboard the downtown 6 train past its last stop as it loops around to head back uptown.
