A tiny cemetery in a nearly vanished Kansas hamlet that acquired, in the 1970s, a reputation as one of the gateways to hell, complete with a ruined stone church, a staircase to nowhere, and a claim that the Pope diverted a flight to avoid overflying it. The stories trace to a student newspaper article in 1974 and grew from there. What is real is the damage: so many trespassers came that the church was demolished in 2002 and the township now prosecutes. It is private, active burial ground with families still visiting. Read about it; do not go.
