Lake Pepin is where the Mississippi spreads out two miles wide between Minnesota and Wisconsin, and people have been reporting something large moving in it since 1871, which puts the first sightings well before Loch Ness was famous. A standing reward has been posted in Lake City for real proof and has gone unclaimed. What is certain is the water itself: this is the widest natural stretch of the whole river, deep and cold, the place where water skiing was invented in 1922, and worth the drive whether or not anything is looking back.
