Paititi, the last Inca refuge

Peru · The Pantiacolla and Madre de Dios forest (Peru)
Paititi, the last Inca refuge
François Gérard · Public domain · source

When Cusco fell the Inca state did not simply stop: a rump kingdom held out at Vilcabamba until 1572, and Jesuit letters describe a further refuge east of the Andes called Paititi, taking the treasure of the empire into the cloud forest. Unlike most lost-city tales this one has archive support, and Peru has genuinely produced hidden Inca sites in this country, Espiritu Pampa among them. The Pantiacolla and Madre de Dios forest is some of the least-walked ground on Earth. Expeditions still go in and people have died looking. Told as an open question, not a promise.
