Chimney Rock, the trail marker

The single most mentioned landmark in emigrant diaries of the Oregon, California and Mormon trails, visible for two days’ travel across the plains. It was the sign you had left the prairie and the mountains were coming. It is measurably shorter now than in the 1840s sketches, weathering and lightning taking it down a little at a time.
