Benjamin Lay, the cave-dwelling abolitionist

A four-foot-seven Quaker who lived in a cave near Abington in the 1730s, grew his own food and wore only what he could make, so as to touch nothing made by a slave. He waged guerrilla theater on the slaveholders of Philadelphia, once splashing fake blood across a meeting, and was cast out of the Quakers for it, then vindicated by history two centuries later. One of the first radical abolitionists in America, and he really did live in a cave.
