America’s Stonehenge

New Hampshire · Salem, New Hampshire

A hillside in Salem, New Hampshire covered in dry-stone chambers, walls and a grooved slab called the sacrificial table, promoted as a 4,000-year-old astronomical site built by Europeans or Phoenicians. Archaeologists read it as a mix of colonial-era farm structures, a 19th-century root-cellar and quarry complex, and additions made by the owner who developed it as an attraction from the 1930s. It is a real and strange place to walk, and it is honest to say the ancient-European claim has no support. PRIVATE, admission charged.
