In the summer of 1988 a seventeen-year-old named Christopher Davis told the Lee County sheriff that something tall, green and upright had chased his car and grabbed the roof while he was changing a tyre near the swamp at two in the morning. There was damage to the car. More reports followed, the sheriff took casts, and the story went national, bringing reporters and thrill-seekers to Bishopville for a summer. No evidence has ever supported a creature, and some reports were admitted hoaxes. But the 1988 panic was entirely real, and the town has made its peace with it.
