A lone grassy hill on the South Dakota prairie that the Lakota, Omaha and Otoe knew to avoid, home, they said, to fierce little people, eighteen inches tall, who killed any human who came near. Lewis and Clark, hearing the story in 1804, marched their men up it in the August heat specifically to see, and found a fine view and a lot of bison but no little devils, though they did note the birds that swarmed the insects on its lee side. It is a public prairie preserve now, one of the few places you can stand exactly where the Corps of Discovery stood and see roughly what they saw.
