Documented folklore from the Club 49 map, told straight and sourced.
In 1856 the Barter gang took roughly $80,000 in gold from the Wells Fargo mule train hauling out of the Trinity mines. Half was carried south and spent; the other half was buried near Auburn by an accomplice who was killed before he could say where. Placer County has been digging for it ever since Rattlesnake Dick himself died in an 1859 shootout without the answer.
Near Auburn, Placer County. Source: Placer County outlaw history (Richard Barter, the 1856 Trinity mule-train robbery). The Club 49 map pins this legend at its documented country, beside the real mines, active claims, land status and modeled honey holes of the same ground. Open the free map and go stand in the story.
