Documented folklore from the Club 49 map, told straight and sourced.
In the 1920s a prospector named Freddie Crystal rode into Kanab with a map he said traced Aztec treasure north after the conquest, and the whole town moved into Johnson Canyon and tunneled the sandstone for two years. They found ancient steps and sealed passages, and no gold. The legend has since attached itself to the drowned ledges of Three Lakes pond, where dive attempts still get talked about and permission never comes.
