Devil’s Hole, the cursed gorge

Documented folklore from the Club 49 map, told straight and sourced.

The story

Where the Niagara gorge widens below the falls, the Senecas long held a cave called the Devil’s Hole to be the lair of an evil spirit, a place of ill omen. In 1763 they proved the point, ambushing a British supply train on the road above and driving wagons, horses and men over the cliff into the gorge, the Devil’s Hole Massacre. The gorge and the state-park trails into it are spectacular and real; the curse is the old story.

The ground it haunts

Niagara Gorge, Niagara Falls (Niagara County, NY). Source: A real Seneca-legend gorge and a documented 1763 ambush. The Club 49 map pins this legend at its documented country, beside the real mines, active claims, land status and modeled honey holes of the same ground. Open the free map and go stand in the story.
